Ibn Masud (ra) reported that the messenger of Allah Peace be upon him said:
"The last person to enter paradise is a man who staggers along avoiding the flames of hell fire until he has passed them and turns around and says:
"Praise be to Allah who has saved me from them. He has granted me something He has never given to anyone before me"
As he finishes praising Allah, a shady tree pops up in front of him. He then says:
"Oh my Lord, please let me approach this tree to take shelter under its shade and drink from the water flowing by".
Allah, the Almighty then asks: "O son of Adam, if I grant you your wish, will you not ask for more?"
The man replies: "No my Lord. I will not"
Having mercy on him, Allah lets him approach it to take shelter and to drink from the fresh, cool water. As he is relaxing, a better tree pops up in front of him. He asks Allah:
"Oh, my lord please let me approach this tree so that I can take shelter under its shade and drink from the water flowing by. I will not ask you for more."
Allah then asks: "Did you not promise me that you would not ask for more?"
The man says: "I promise, my Lord, I will not ask you again."
Having mercy on him, Allah grants him his second wish. As the man enjoys his new shelter and drinking the water flowing by, a third tree, better than the previous two, pops up at the entrance of paradise. The man asks Allah:
"Oh my lord, please let me approach this tree so that I can take shelter in its shade and drink from the water flowing by. I promise I will not ask you again."
Allah then says: "Oh son of Adam, did you not promise Me that you would not ask Me for more?"
The man replies "Yes, my Lord, please my Lord, give me access to this tree and water flowing by it. I promise I will not ask you again."
Having mercy on him, Allah lets him approach it where he starts to hear the voices of paradise's inhabitants. The man could not help asking:
"Oh my Lord, please, let me enter paradise."
Allah then says: "What will stop you, Oh son of Adam?! Will you be satisfied if I give you the whole world and one equivalent to it?
The man then replies: "Oh, my Lord, are you playing a joke on me and you are the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds?"
Allah then says: "I am not making fun of you. I am able to do whatever I like".
